Full Description:

Candi Ijo was built around the 9th century, on a hill. It is known as Bukit Hijau or Gumuk Ijo which is about 410 m above sea level. Because of its height, it is not only the temple buildings that can be enjoyed but also the natural scenery below in the form of terraces like in agricultural areas with a steep slope. Even though it is not a fertile area, the natural scenery of the temple is very beautiful to enjoy it. This is the highest temple in Jogja. It is located on the top of the Ijo hill which has a height of about 395 meters above sea level. Based on the records of the Ipoh Inscription, this temple, a heritage from the Medang kingdom of Ancient Mataram, was built around the 10th to 11th centuries. Its function is as a place of worship and worship of Hindu gods such as Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu. This is evident from a number of ancillary temples. It is containing yoni phallus for the worship of this god. This temple complex is estimated to have an area of ​​more than 0.8 hectares. All of the artifacts and parts of the temple have not been found. You can see several temples still in the process of being restored in the western part of the temple complex. The name Ijo itself comes from a note in the Ipoh inscription about the origin of Desa Ijo or Orang Ijo. From there, this temple became known as Candi Ijo. Until now, the process of restoring the temple continues and that doesn't diminish the beauty of this temple.
